About the Production

“A Family Man is Still a Man.” It all started with this phrase, in a meeting at the Raging Artists offices in downtown LA. Director/Cameraman Tim Damon (helmer of recent campaigns for Cadillac, Audi, Goodyear, Toyota, and the list goes on) sat with RA Creative Directors Hesh Rephun, Justo Diaz, and Ernie Noh to discuss an experimental piece that would offer an alternative perspective for minivan buyers.

The RA team – all minivan-driving dads themselves – envisioned a day off in the life of an Odyssey driver. The story, as written, conveyed a day filled with fun, spontaneity, and yes, responsibility. But unlike so many depictions of family life, this one would show that husbands and dads embrace their lives and that carseats and brotherhood can coexist in harmony.

Tim immediately sparked to idea and jumped on board, with the caveat that everyone take full advantage of the liberties afforded by non-commissioned work: have a lot of fun, push some buttons, and abandon any “car spot” conventions.

Tim, Square Planet, and the Raging Artists team took over the city of Carson, CA, filming in multiple locations from an elementary school to a driving range to a car wash in a sun-soaked, incredibly ambitious one-day shoot. In fact, weather reports called for storms and with much of the shoot taking place outdoors and outside the Odyssey, there was a lot of finger-crossing. The good karma (a Damon staple) paid off and sunny skies prevailed.

The result is a spirited journey somewhat reminiscent of “Hot Tub Time Machine” in its whirlwind pacing and fun-loving bromantic attitude. After all, “A Family Man is Still a Man.”
